What is Perplexity-User?

Perplexity-User is the user-agent string used when Perplexity's AI assistant browses the web in real-time during a user's conversation. This is separate from PerplexityBot, which crawls for the persistent search index.

When a Perplexity user asks a question that requires current information, Perplexity-User fetches pages live, extracts relevant content, and presents it with citations. Each visit represents a specific user query about your content.

The volume is lower than PerplexityBot since it only fires for real-time requests, but each visit represents direct user interest. Perplexity-User respects robots.txt separately, giving site owners granular control over real-time versus index crawling.
