What is AI Search Engine?

A search platform that uses AI to generate direct answers with citations instead of traditional link results.

AI search engines represent a fundamental shift from "ten blue links" to conversational, AI-generated answers. Instead of listing websites that might contain the answer, AI search engines read multiple sources, synthesize the information, and present a direct answer with citations to the original sources.

Major AI search engines include Perplexity (dedicated AI search), ChatGPT Search (via OAI-SearchBot), Google AI Overviews (via Gemini), and DuckDuckGo DuckAssist. Each builds its own index using dedicated crawlers, and being indexed by these crawlers determines whether your content appears in AI-generated answers.

For content creators and businesses, AI search represents both a threat (reduced click-through from summarized answers) and an opportunity (citation-driven traffic from a new discovery channel). The key is being indexed, well-structured, and authoritative enough to be cited as a source.

How Switch Helps

Switch identifies AI search engine crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) separately from training crawlers, letting you optimize content specifically for AI search citation.
